Charlotte Higgins

Charlotte Higgins is the chief culture writer of the Guardian. Her current focus is the war in Ukraine; a regular column on the Opinion pages; and longform articles. Specialising in the arts, she is particularly interested in subjects where culture, politics and society meet.

As an author, most of her books touch on the classics, which she studied at university. Under Another Sky was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson (now Baillie Gifford) prize, among other awards, and has been adapted into a play by David Greig; Red Thread won the Arnold Bennett prize and was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. Her latest, Greek Myths, with illustrations by Chris Ofili, was shortlisted for the Waterstones book of the year 2021.

A further book, This New Noise, was adapted from a series of Guardian essays about the BBC.

In naming her one of 10 extraordinary women writers working today, novelist Elif Shafak wrote: “Charlotte Higgins is an author with magic in her pen. From ancient subjects she conjures living text: vast conversations about who we are today and why the stories we tell really matter.”

Born in the Potteries, Charlotte is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a former winner of the UK’s Classical Association Prize.
