Every year the British School at Rome offers outstanding scholars and artists the opportunity to join this community and work in Rome for 3 to 9 months.
Our highly competitive awards are offered across the BSR’s disciplines in the Fine Arts, Architecture, Archaeology, History and Modern Italian Studies. Award-holders receive accommodation and full board (except dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday) in a study bedroom or artist’s studio.
The British School at Rome is a superb environment for facilitating scholarly exchange. From a small colloquium to a major conference: we have a lecture theatre, meeting rooms, break out space and entertaining areas all enhanced by conference support which truly understands the needs of academics – because that’s what we are.
Many libraries, archives, collections and monuments in Italy are not open to the public. The British School at Rome is often able to gain access for our scholars, artists and residents wanting to visit a closed or restricted site.
If you are coming to the BSR specifically to access a particular site you are strongly encouraged to contact the Permissions Officer, Stefania Peterlini as early as possible.

The BSR Experience
“The BSR culture was like nothing I’d experienced before, I really loved the cross disciplinary exchanges / friendships and how this feeds into a broader understanding of Rome and it’s history, studio practice and research.”
Kate Mackeson, Augusta Scholar 2018–19
“The fellowship gave me a new confidence in my practice as an artist – and above all, I benefited immensely from the conversations and friendships I made with fellow artists and academics from other disciplines.”
Sinta Tantra, The Bridget Riley Fellow 2016–17
“I have no doubt that the Scholars’ Prize was of fundamental importance to my future practice. The experience changed how I think about my own work and helped define the questions I wanted to pursue in the future.”
Morgan Gostwyck-Lewis (winner of the Scholars’ Prize in Architecture, 2016–17)
