The contribution illustrates the projects and new challenges of the Appia Antica Archaeological Park, an independent Institute of the Italian Ministry of Culture, invested with the important role of protecting and enhancing a vast territorial area enclosed between via Appia and Via Latina. The presentation shows the activities that have been carried out in the park in recent years and post-pandemic, illustrating the numerous enhancement activities, restorations and new discoveries, the musical and theatrical events, the institutional projects, such as the UnESCO WHL inscription proposal and the new challenges connected with URBS and CAPUT MUNDI projects.

Simone Quilici is an architect and landscape architect currently director of Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica and an adjunct professor at the American University of Rome teaching cultural heritage management. He was previously working for Regione Lazio Culture Department (Cultural Heritage Service). After qualifying at Università di Roma La Sapienza he took a PhD at Università di Firenze in urban, territorial and environmental architecture. Since then has worked on many major heritage projects including the via Francigena pilgrimage route, the masterplan for environmental, cultural and touristic enhancement of northern littoral of Lazio, the Appia Antica and the Unesco inscription proposal of Valnerina municipalities of Umbria. He has conducted research on the heritage of Sabaudia, the GIL building of Luigi Moretti, EUR district and via Imperiale in Rome.
