Stephen graduated in Archaeology at the University of Durham and later from the University of Southampton with an MSc in Archaeological Computing. He is currently Honorary Secretary of the International Society of Archaeological Prospection.

Stephen’s interests lie in landscape archaeology and Roman urbanism, and he specialises in geophysical prospection. He has led surveys throughout Italy and the wider Mediterranean area. He is an investigating partner in the Rome Transformed Project and runs joint research projects in the Marche, Umbria and Lazio.

Stephen was appointed Archaeology Officer in 2015 and became Archaeology Manager in 2022. Currently he is also a Visiting Researcher at Newcastle University and a Visiting Academic at Southampton University.
