On 11 February, the “Praeneste. La riscoperta della città antica tra Ottocento e Novecento” exhibition opened, in the splendid setting of the Museo di Palestrina in the Complex of the Forum Buildings in Piazza Regina Margherita.
Nearly 30 images from the BSR photographic collections have been requested for the exhibition curated by Dr Andrea Fiasco in collaboration with Regione Lazio, Comune di Palestrina and Museo Nazionale Romano. Reproductions from the Thomas Ashby Collection, the John-Bryan Ward-Perkins Collection as well as from other prominent photographers such as Dora & Agnes Bulwer and Peter Paul Mackey will be displayed alongside materials from various research institutes and archives in Rome.
The exhibition aims to retrace the most important phases of the rediscovery of the ancient city of Palestrina, with a particular focus on the 19th century and the first half of 20th century. Narratives will be built around the pivotal contributions of Italian and foreigner scholars, individuals, associations and illustrious local families that gave prominence to the city through their research activities and intellectual and financial endeavour. Ashby and Ward-Perkins’ documentation of the ancient city in different time periods will underpin the historical account of the exhibition.
The exhibition can be visited until 31 May 2023.
