MaryAnne Stevens is an independent art historian and curator, who specializes in 18th-, 19th- and early 20th- century art. Following a full-time career in the academic world, she served as Director of Academic Affairs at the Royal Academy of Arts, establishing the Learning Department and the Architecture Programme, professionalizing the Collections, Library and Archive, and, for three years from 2005 – 2007, serving as Acting Secretary.
She has published extensively and curated/co-curated many major international loan exhibitions, including several devoted to architectural themes, including ‘New Architecture: Foster, Rogers, Stirling’ (1986), ‘Recent British Architecture’ (1994 – 95), ‘Beyond Minimalism: The Architecture of Tadao Ando’ (1998), ‘New Urban Environments’ (1998 – 99), ‘Sir John Soane: Master of Space and Light’ (1999 – 2000), ‘Palladio’ (20-08 – 09), ‘Building the Revolution: Russian Constructivist Art and Architecture 1915 – 1935’ (2012). The most recent exhibition has been After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art (National Gallery London, 2023).
She sits on the Board of the Royal Institute of British Architects and on the Scientific Committee of the Marcello Project (Fribourg) and is consultant to the Sparebankstiftelsen DNB (Norway).
