The BSR is very experienced in supporting and facilitating research across the full range of subjects pertaining to the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Archaeology – Geophysical Prospection

The BSR is a pioneering institution in archaeological survey, from the early ground-breaking South Etruria surveys of John Ward-Perkins to the more recent concentration on remote sensing. For over 25 years, the BSR has conducted geophysical prospection throughout Italy, Africa and the wider Mediterranean area.

The BSR has a dedicated team of geophysicists and owns a wide range of the latest survey instruments, including various antennae for Ground-Penetrating Radar, multiple magnetometry sensors and a cart system, resistance and electrical tomography meters. Alongside this, the team undertakes high precision topographical and building survey using the latest 3D recording technology.

The BSR offers specialist geophysical and topographical survey support through collaborations with partners working in Italy and the wider Mediterranean. On completion of a survey, detailed reports are prepared, drawing upon the resources of the BSR’s specialist library. The BSR’s geophysical surveys are regularly published in leading academic journals, magazines and in the Papers of the British School at Rome.

For enquiries about how the BSR can support your research through non-invasive survey, please contact the BSR Archaeology Manager, Stephen Kay

Digital Humanities

The Research Collections Department is partner in various research projects that contain Digital Humanities aspects. We can support your project and help you identify what option is best for you, whether you are thinking about a database, a visualisation website, virtual exhibitions or other online projects. We are committed to ensuring the long-term preservation of your data, and where possible we will update and migrate older projects to keep them live, as we did with the John Marshall project whose 10-year-old database was recently migrated into our digital library. See our Digital Collections portal here: https://digitalcollections.bsr.ac.uk

Alongside these specific areas, the BSR is able to support research across the humanities.
