James Page

James Page gained his PhD in Classics from the University of Edinburgh in 2022. He was a Rome Fellow at the BSR from 2023-2024, and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre from 2024-2026. His first monograph, From the Adriatic to the Alps: Transport and Trade Networks in Roman and Late Antique Northern Italy, was published by Archaeopress in 2025.

James’ research is focused on Roman social and economic interactions with waterways, ranging from fluvial transport and trade networks to flood defences and water management. During his time at the BSR, James will be working on a new monograph exploring Roman responses to hydrological risk on the Italian Peninsula, investigating how ancient communities adapted and responded to flooding, drought, and other hazards presented by water. As Resident Fellow, James will combine an active programme of research with a central role in the intellectual and residential life of the BSR. He will contribute to the School’s lectures, seminars and events, support residents across disciplines, strengthen partnerships with universities and cultural institutions in the UK and Italy, and help develop new research collaborations and opportunities.

An active excavator, James has worked at numerous archaeological sites in Italy and is currently a co-director of the Cures Sabini Project, a new archaeological initiative exploring the history of the Roman city of Cures Sabini in the Middle Tiber Valley.
