The site of Furfo lies a few kilometres to the east of Aquila in the Comune di Barisciano on the ancient via Claudia Nova. The aim of the new project is to investigate the vicus, a little studied form of Roman settlement, in its entirety. The site has been identified thanks to the discovery of several inscriptions, one of which (CIL, IX, 3521), dated to the beginning of the 1st century BC, is still in situ inside a structure identified as a public fountain or cistern. Close by is the ruin of the church of Santa Maria di Farfona. The research is undertaken in collaboration with the Università degli studi dell’Aquila, the Soprintendenza ABAP per le province di L’Aquila e Teramo and the Comune di Barisciano.
