Dr Carlos Machado

Carlos Machado is Professor of Ancient History at the University of St Andrews. His work explores the history and archaeology of the western Mediterranean in the imperial and late antique periods, with a particular focus on Rome and Italy. He has published works on the relationship between urban space and power, the late Roman aristocracy, late antique epigraphy, and the impact of Christianity on Rome. Over the years, Carlos has maintained a close relationship with the British School, where he attended the City of Rome course (2002), was a Rome Scholar (2005-2006), and spent considerable periods doing his own research. His current project is a study of the role of poverty in the making of the late antique West, and he is a co-PI in the AHRC-DFG funded project “Land and Loyalty: the politics of land in the later Roman World (4th-6th c.)”.
