Balsdon and Hugh Last Fellowships

We invite applications from established scholars holding academic posts at UK universities for the prestigious Balsdon and Hugh Last Fellowships at the BSR. These awards offer a unique opportunity to pursue your own research while engaging with a vibrant, interdisciplinary community of scholars and artists in Rome.

Fellows are encouraged to contribute to the intellectual life of the BSR by sharing their work through a lecture, workshop, or similar event, and by connecting with other residents working in related fields.

The Balsdon Fellowship supports research into the social, religious, political, and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula—from early prehistory to the modern era—and their wider impact through texts, images, and material culture.

The Hugh Last Fellowship supports research on classical antiquity (excluding archaeological fieldwork and Roman Britain).

Come be part of a dynamic, collaborative environment in one of the world’s most inspiring cities.

Applications open in September and close in November each year. Click here to apply!
