Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Research Residency

Offered in partnership with the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, this six-week residency supports a Scotland-based artist working in any medium. Honouring the memory of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham—one of the foremost British artists of the 20th century—the residency reflects her belief in the value of travel, research, and cultural exchange in shaping artistic practice.

Designed specifically for research towards the development of new work, the residency provides time, space, and inspiration to explore new ideas in one of the world’s most culturally resonant cities. The selected artist will live and work at the BSR, joining our dynamic international community of artists, architects, and researchers.

Residents benefit from access to the BSR’s extensive resources—including its specialist library, gallery visits, and research events—while immersing themselves in Rome’s layered artistic and historical landscape.

Eligibility: Open to artists of British or Commonwealth nationality who are resident in Scotland.

Application Deadline: 15 December

Applications open each September. Click here to learn more and apply.
