Stefania Gerevini

Stefania Gerevini is Associate Professor in the History of Medieval Art at Bocconi University, Milan. She specializes in the visual cultures of Italian cities, their Mediterranean connections, and the modern receptions of medieval and Byzantine art. Her work primarily centers on the nexus between arts and politics in the Mediterranean, with particular focus on artistic exchanges, political conflict, and public memory in Venice and its overseas empire (Facing Crisis: Art as Politics in Fourteenth-Century Venice, HUP 2024). Her research also explores the agency and performativity  of medieval and Byzantine artifacts: she is currently leading a project on the interplay between materiality and immateriality in Venetian gold and silver altarpieces, which also investigates the potential of traditional and digital imaging techniques to document historical artifacts and visualize their original functioning. Finally, she has a long-term interest in medieval conceptualizations and artistic applications of light and transparency, with special attention to the use and meaning of rock crystal in the religious and secular cultures of medieval Europe.
