The Falerii Novi Project, established in 2021, aims to improve our understanding of the historical and urban development of this important town in South Etruria, 50km north of Roman. The project, using a range of scientific techniques alongside traditional excavation, is investigating aspects of its chronology, such as its foundation, as well as its relationship with its hinterland and its role within the regional trade network.
The research is conducted in partnership with the universities of Harvard, London and Toronto, with the support of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la provincia di Viterbo e per l’Etruria meridionale.
Guided by the preceding geophysical surveys, the project can target individual buildings and urban infrastructure: a macellum, a domus to the south of the forum, an intersection inside the South Gate and a row of tabernae on the northern side of the forum.
