Dr Sam Agbamu

Dr Sam Agbamu is a Classicist who works on Latin literature, Roman history, and their reception. He is especially interested in how ideas drawn from the literatures of the Roman world – especially epic poetry – have shaped identities in the centuries after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. His work crosses and troubles chronological boundaries but has a general focus on the continent of Africa and its relations with Rome and its successors. Sam’s more recent interests revolve around the reception of Rome’s relations with Africa in Renaissance Latin epic. More broadly, Sam’s work explores the role of the construction of classical antiquity in modern ideologies of colonialism, Eurocentrism, and white supremacy.
