Brigitte Jurack

Brigitte Jurack is an artist and Reader in Sculpture and Time-based Arts at Manchester School of Art (MSoA), Manchester Metropolitan University.

Previously she was Programme Leader in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle, and lecturer in sculpture at Liverpool John Moore’s University and Derby University.

Jurack allows her artistic practice to be challenged by current affairs, literature, landscape and history and when working in the studio, she remains restless, always on a lookout for different materials, processes and forms.

Her research interests include landscape and memory (legacies of the cold war), sculpture and ecology, and the power of representation and mimicry in sculpture.

While working across a range of media, including collaborative performances, Jurack is driven by the tactility, plasticity, and spatial dimension of sculpture, and its power to engage on a none-verbal level with others across space and time.

She has also run sculpture projects with marginalised young people and people in Dementia Care settings in collaboration with local authorities and Bluecoat, Liverpool. From her studio in Birkenhead she hosted Translating the street, a series of international artists’ residencies, that were situated in local international micro businesses, and as co-founder of the artist collective Foreign Investment she has focussed on transient exchange processes in the context of an increasingly post-industrial service-based economy.

Jurack has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, with notable solo exhibitions at Victoria Gallery and Museum (Liverpool), HOME (Manchester), the Bluecoat (Liverpool), IMMA (Dublin), MIMA (Middlesbrough), and group exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Rio de Janeiro, Toyota, London, Newcastle, Bury, Salzburg and Kiev.
