An early-career award at the BSR is a chance to be integrated into a highly supportive community that opens doors to multiple research opportunities.

Humanities and social sciences (any aspect of the social, religious, political and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula, and their wider textual, visual and material dissemination and reception from early prehistory to the modern period).

Open to
applicants for Fellowships normally must be within three years of the award of their doctorate at the closing date for applications. Applicants must be British citizens or must have been awarded their doctorate by a UK university.

Applications for Rome Fellowships, Rome Scholarships and Rome Awards are considered in a single competition. Separate applications are not required.

Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens; or must be studying or have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK, having completed by October 2022 not less than four years of residence in the UK.

∙ preferential access to the BSR’s Library

Research area
This new BSR award, established in 2021 in memory of Professor Simon Keay, is for research on any aspect of Roman archaeology in the Mediterranean. Applications are welcomed in areas of research similar to, although not limited by, work undertaken by Simon, in particular trade, ports, Portus and ceramic studies.

Open to
The The Award is open to early career researchers. Applicants may be at post-graduate or post-doctoral level. For postgraduates, applicants normally will have begun a programme of research in the general field of the Roman archaeology in the Mediterranean, whether or not registered for a higher degree. Post-doctoral applicants normally will be within three years of the award of their doctorate (i.e. awarded no earlier than February 2020). The Award is an open call and is not restricted by nationality, residency or educational affiliation.

Research Grant
The award may take the following formats:

  • free board and lodging at the BSR for three months, with a monthly research and travel grant

OR

  • free board and lodging at the BSR for one month, and two months of fieldwork (to be undertaken within a year of the award being made), with a monthly research and travel grant.Fieldwork may include any form of practical work relating to archaeological research, including, but not restricted to, the study of material at sites, non-invasive surveys, consultation of archives and consultation of museum collections, which it is not feasible to do from a base in Rome.

The Paul Mellon Centre sponsors an annual 3-month Rome Fellowship.

Research area
British-Italian art-historical topics of any period from the medieval era to the contemporary.

Open to
scholars, researchers, curators, archivists and GLAM professionals from immediately post-doctoral to those internationally recognised in their field of expertise. Applicants must have been awarded their doctorate by the closing date for applications.

Duration
3 months (late September-late December; January-March; April-June)

Research Grant
Independent scholars: £7,000. Full-time university employees: £3,000, plus £8,000 towards teaching replacement at the Fellow’s home institution.

The Society of Renaissance Studies sponsors an annual 3-month Rome Scholarship.

Research area
Doctoral projects must relate to some aspect of the Renaissance. SRS’s understanding of ‘Renaissance’ is broad: we welcome applications from all disciplinary backgrounds, and across a wide chronological and geographical spectrum.

Open to
Students of any nationality are invited to apply. Students must be currently enrolled in a doctoral programme at a British or Irish university, and must be at and advanced stage of their studies when taking up the award.

Duration
3 months (late September-late December; January-March; April-June)

In making an appointment to an award the Faculty of Archaeology, History and Letters will assess all applications using the following set of criteria:

  • The inherent academic significance and interest of the project proposed, and the feasibility of completion to the timetable stated.

  • The suitability of the project for the BSR, bearing in mind its location, resources and access to resources.

  • The academic merit of the applicant judged by his/her previous record and references, including her/his prospects of making a future contribution to scholarship.

  • The suitability of the candidate to contribute to the academic community of the BSR and the need to ensure a reasonable balance between different disciplines and chronological periods within the BSR’s academic community.

  • The role of the Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards in promoting Italian studies in Britain and the Commonwealth.
