Appointment of Sir Nigel Carrington as Chair Elect of the Council of Trustees

The British School at Rome is delighted to announce the appointment of Sir Nigel Carrington as Chair Elect of the Council of Trustees, to succeed current Chair Mark Getty, KBE, who steps down in June of our anniversary year, 2026.
Following an earlier career in law and business, Sir Nigel was Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Arts London between 2008-2021 and has deep involvement as Chair of a range of arts and educational charities and foundations. He brings exceptional experience to the role and is ideally positioned to guide the BSR into its next chapter.
Mark Getty, who steps down after 8 years of leadership, has been instrumental in strengthening the BSR’s position as a leading centre for research, creativity, and cultural exchange. In response to the appointment he said:

“I am delighted to be handing this precious institution over to such an excellent successor and eager to see where the BSR goes next under his Chairmanship.”

Nigel Carrington said:

“I am excited to have joined the Council and to be following Mark as Chair in June. As the largest British centre of interdisciplinary research excellence based in the EU, the British School at Rome is on an impressive journey and plays an important role in providing British and Commonwealth artists and academics with a bridge into the cultural heart of Rome, Italy and the Mediterranean as a whole. I feel privileged to be joining the BSR’s great team as we build on 125 years of excellence in the visual arts and in research in archaeology, architecture, and the broader fields of the humanities and social sciences.”

We are grateful for Mark’s years of service and thrilled to welcome Sir Nigel as the BSR embarks on this exciting new era.
