Alessandra Tafaro

Alessandra Tafaro, who was an award holder at the BSR in 2022, joined us from Macerata, where she has been a Postdoctoral Researcher since 2022. She completed her BA and MA degrees at the University of Rome, ‘La Sapienza’, and her doctoral studies at the University of Warwick.

Alessandra’s research sits at the intersection of Latin literature and Roman epigraphy. In 2025, she published her first monograph, Inscribing Flavian Rome: Epigraphic Strategies in Martial’s Epigrams (Oxford University Press), which offers a new reading of Martial’s epigrams through the lens of epigraphic discourse and spatial politics in Flavian Rome.

During her British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the BSR, she is working on a new project entitled Inscribing Anonymity: Unauthored Poetry in Roman Epigraphic Culture – a ground-breaking analysis of an underexplored corpus of anonymous metrical inscriptions from Rome and Pompeii (1st century BC – 2nd century AD). Through the interpretive frame of anonymity, the project rethinks political discourse, identity politics, gender relations, practices of citation, and models of authorship in the Roman world.
