The project (2021) explores the lives and relationships of the Rome Scholars, artists and architects who studied at the British School at Rome in the 1910s and 1920s, through short biographies and an exploration of the archival material held at the School. Our site introduces the networks of people and ideas that emerged with the establishment of the Rome Prizes for Decorative Painting, Engraving, Sculpture and Architecture from 1913 up until 1930.
An example of online public engagement based on the extraordinary archive at the BSR, the project was prepared by Dr Peter Buckles (University of Liverpool), Dr Ksenia Litvinenko (University of Manchester) and Dr Nia Davies (University of Salford) in collaboration with Dr Harriet O’Neill, Assistant director at the BSR, and Alessandra Giovenco, BSR Archivist. This collaboration between the British School at Rome and the University of Manchester was developed in partnership with Collaboration Labs at the Economic and Social Research Council (UKRI).
