Celebrate 125 years of the BSR

For 125 years, the British School at Rome (BSR) has been a beacon of cultural exchange, research excellence, and artistic innovation.

Founded in 1901, the BSR has supported generations of scholars, artists, architects, writers, and researchers at formative moments in their careers. From archaeology and history to visual art, architecture, and literature, the BSR has fostered interdisciplinary dialogue, groundbreaking research, and creative work that resonates far beyond Rome.

Today, as we celebrate our 125th anniversary, we also unveil a BSR logo for our anniversary year that reflects both our history and our future. Rooted in a proud legacy and looking forward with confidence, this logo signals renewal, openness, and our continued commitment to shaping global conversations through the arts and humanities. The logo was designed by Hardeep Dhindsa, Leverhulme Study Abroad Scholar at BSR in 2023, a researcher and graphic designer whose work draws extensively on the history and architecture of the BSR.

125 Years of Impact

Since its inception, the BSR has supported thousands of British and international residents, offering unparalleled access to Rome’s cultural and intellectual world across disciplines:
  • Visual artists and architects, creating work in dialogue with Rome’s layered history and contemporary challenges
  • Historians and archaeologists, uncovering insights that deepen our understanding of the past and inform the future
  • Writers and researchers, producing literature and scholarship with global reach
This diversity makes the BSR a rare incubator of ideas — a place where collaboration thrives across boundaries of discipline, nationality, and practice, and where emerging talent is given the time, space, and community to develop.
At a time when funding for the arts and humanities is under increasing pressure, BSR residencies are more vital than ever. They provide the conditions for creative and academic work that addresses urgent global questions — from urbanism and sustainability to cultural identity, dialogue, and diplomacy.
As we celebrate this anniversary, we want to place our community at the centre of the story and we are seeking both donations and the memories of your times at the BSR.

Why Your Support Matters

While the BSR’s reputation is world-class, its resources are limited.

Your contribution will help us to:
  • Retain and expand research excellence by funding residencies for emerging and established scholars
  • Champion creativity by supporting artists and architects to create and exhibit new work

  • Preserve heritage through archaeological research and conservation projects across Italy

  • Enhance access and inclusion, opening doors to a more diverse community of researchers and creatives

  • Provide state-of-the-art studios and research facilities

  • Support public engagement through exhibitions, lectures, publications, and outreach programmes

  • Build our endowment, securing the long-term future of the BSR

Without philanthropic support, these transformative opportunities risk being out of reach for many talented individuals.

We want to hear your stories!

We invite you to share your memories of life and work at the BSR — moments of shared meals, creative collaboration, research breakthroughs, conversations, and friendships that helped shape your journey.

Your stories will inspire the next generation of scholars and artists — and help us reflect on what makes the BSR a unique place.

Every contribution matters. Every story — and every donation — nurtures our community and supports the future of the BSR.
