The British School at Rome expresses its deep sadness in hearing of the loss of Joyce Maire Reynolds. Joyce Maire Reynolds (1918–2022) was an outstanding scholar and a dedicated fellow and academic who pursued her studies in Classics and Roman Historical Epigraphy in a male-dominated field.
She first came to the BSR in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, after obtaining the Rome Scholarship in Classical Studies (1946-1948). In collaboration with John Bryan Ward-Perkins, at that time BSR Director, she undertook a pivotal study on Libyan inscriptions that led to the publication of the Inscriptions of Roman Tripolitania in 1952. She continued her liaison with the BSR also in other capacities, for example, by serving on the Faculty of Archaeology, History & Letters at various points between the 1950s to 1980s. Our thoughts are with Joyce’s family, her friends and the generations of students she fostered over so many years.
